Canisius vs. St Bonaventure

11/29/2008    7:00 PM

The excitement of Big 4 college basketball makes its return to HSBC Arena on Saturday, November 29 at 7 p.m., as the Canisius College Golden Griffins meet their long-time rivals, the St. Bonaventure Bonnies, in a holiday classic.  This will be the 157th meeting between the two Western New York schools with St. Bonaventure holding a 94-62 advantage all-time.

Canisius will enter the 105th season in school history in 2008-09 and will make their third trip in three seasons to HSBC Arena.  Tom Parrotta’s team advanced to the quarterfinals of the MAAC tournament last season and look to build on the strong finish.  The Griffins, which ended the season as the nation’s sixth-youngest team at the Division I level, returns all five starters and nine letter winners from last year’s roster, including Frank Turner, Bob Bevilacqua, Greg Logins and Elton Frazier.

St. Bonaventure, looking to improve their win total for the second straight season under head coach Mark Schmidt, will make their first trip to HSBC Arena since 2004.  This will also mark a homecoming of sorts for Lackawanna High School and Erie Community College standout Ray Blackburn, who is one of nine newcomers to the Bonnies this season.
